NEW MANAGE USERS APP
RESEARCH / WIREFRAMES / USER TESTING / HIGH FIDELITY PROTOTYPES
The Problem
The Visual Design Team had made updates to McGraw Hill Education's style guide which required the entire Open Learning platform to convert to the new theme kit. The development team had also started working on rebuilding the entire platform in Angular. I was responsible for leading the user experience and improving users flows for the Manages Users application that allowed District/School Administrators and Teachers to manage/edit users throughout districts and schools. I worked in collaboration with product managers, engineers, the research team, the visual design team, and business stakeholders to create enhanced flows and update the UI.
Old UI
One of the biggest issues with the old flows was that the Students, Instructors, and Administrators were separated in the left hand navigation. This was an inconvenience to users, especially administrators, because of a use case were a user could be both and administrator and a teacher for a particular school. Users would have to switch back and forth between the apps with no indication that the user had 2 roles. Based on business requests and feedback from customers, all users would be combined inside a Manage Users application.
Collaboration
All MHE Product and Design teams across the US gathered at the office in Columbus, OH for a 5 day workshop to answer important business questions as well as collaborate on how changes would impact each of our applications. To gain a better understanding of what everyone was working on, we started off by defining the goal, looking at potential solutions and how changes would impact other applications, and creating an end to end prototype of all impacted applications to display commonalities and areas that could be improved.
High Fidelity Mocks
Once the low fidelity prototypes were complete to fulfill business requirements and answer remaining technical questions, I proceeded to implement the new UI components to produce a high fidelity prototype to test on our users. Working with the Research Team, we conducted a usability testing session with 5 of our customers and implemented minor changes based on their feedback.
Major improvements included:
• Combining all users into one application on the left navigation for easier access to all users
• Separation of Students and Staff (Administrators and Teachers) via Tabs within the Manage Users app
• When viewing Students, users have the ability to see multiple Student IDs and multiple Schools enrolled if applicable
• When viewing Staff, users have the ability to see multiple roles and associated Organizations if applicable
• Ability to Bulk Upload users using CSV files
• Ability to filter users by Schools
